# handoff
Handoff turns a long or completed Pi conversation into a focused starting prompt for the next session.
Use it when you want to change direction, split work into a fresh thread, or leave a clear next task without manually reconstructing context.

## Start here
In Pi's interactive terminal UI, run `/handoff `.
```text
/handoff Implement the approved authentication plan
```
Handoff summarizes relevant decisions, files, and next work from the current conversation into an editable prompt.
Review and edit that prompt before confirming.
Pi then opens a new session with the prompt in its editor, ready for you to submit when it looks right.
The new session links to the current session when it has a saved session file.
## Notes
A selected model and a non-empty conversation are required.
Escape during generation, or cancel the editor, to leave the current session unchanged.
Generated handoff prompts are instructed to redact secrets and personal data, but review the editable prompt before submitting it.
Handoff has no settings.
See [Installation](../../README.md#install).
